Allergens are classified into inhalant and food allergens. The inhalant allergens include dust, fungi, pollen, wood, epithelials, insect, fabrics, and food allergens include cereals, egg and milk, meats, fish, shell fish, vegetables, fruits, beverage and so on. Skin test with Bencard allergens was performed with 547 cases of allergic rhinitis which were confirmed at the allergy clinic of Seoul National University Hospital during a period of 2 years and 10 months from Oct., 1980 till Aug., 1983. The prevalence of positive skin reaction was studied. The results were as follows : 1) The most common offending allergens and their positive rates were house dust 50.8%, Dermatophagoides farinae 54.8%, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus 50.1%, straw dust 17.6%, hay dust 24.5%, mixed threshing 15.2%, dog hair 17.7%, cat hair 20.1%, rabbit hair 14.8% and house fly 12.8%. 2) There was statistically no significant difference in prevalence of prick test reactions by residential areas. 3) Prevalence of prick test reactions to house dusts and mites, and dog and cat hairs were higher in the patients under the age of 20 (p<0.05). 4) Prevalence of prick test reactions to house dusts and mites, and hay dust (i.e. dusts and mites group) was higher in the patients with in creased total serum IgE level (P<0.01). 5) Seasonal distribution of the common offending allergens was as follows ; house dusts & mites in autumn and winter, straw dust, hay dust, mixed threshing and chrysanthemum pollen in autumn and dog, cat and rabbit hairs in winter.
