ABSTRACT |
We studied 43 patients who had been hospitalized to Dept. of Otolaryngology and Neurosurgery, Catholic Medical College, after head injury from January, 1981 to December, 1984. We carried a thorough physical, radiologic and audiometric examinations. The results were as follows : 1) Of the 43 patients, 34 patients(79%) were men and 9 patients(21%) were women. 2) Most of them were injured in automobile accident and falling down accident. 3) Of temporal bone fractures (1) Longitudinal fractures were 32 cases(74%), (2) Transverse fractures were 9 cases(21%), (3) Mixed fractures were 2 cases(5%). 4) On otologic symptoms and findings. (1) Most common symptom was hearing impairment which was 35 cases(81%), ear bleeding in 26 cases(60%), tinnitus in 18 cases(42%), vertigo and dizziness in 7 cases(16%), and facial palsy in 3 cases(7%). (2) Audiologic study was performed for 35 patients of them, conductive hearing loss was 20 cases(57%), sensorineural hearing loss in 12 cases(34%), and mixed hearing loss in 3 cases(9%). 5) Follow-up symptoms and audiologic findings. (1) Follow-up of 21 cases of hearing loss, 13 cases were improved, 8 cases were no improved. (2) 7 cases of 18 tinnitus were spontaneously improved during 2 months, but remaining 11 cases were no improved. (3) 6 cases of 7 vertigo and dizziness were improved during 2 months. (4) In follow up 2 cases of facial palsy, all were improved.
