ABSTRACT |
A peritonsillar abscess is a disease frequently found in a deep neck infection. The peritonsillar abscess shows favourable prognosis if it is treated properly with antibiotics and incision and drainage in an early stage, but improper home treatment and a delay in getting the treatment at the proper time may result in spreading infection into the surrounding tissues which eventually may lead not only to the formation of a thrombus of a deep neck vessel but may also develop serious complications such as sepsis of the mediastinum through the parapharyngeal space, and dyspnea from an abscess spreading into a lower region causing edema of the larynx. The authors experienced a situation of one patient recently, a 48-year-old female, who died from the complication of generalized sepsis caused by peritonsillar abscess and a brief review of literature was made.
