ABSTRACT

Primary tuberculous abscess in retropharyngeal space is very rare. A 17-year old male patient whose medical history had no pulmonary tuberculosis, was admitted on 8th november 1985, with swallowing discomfort and generalized fatigue for about 1-month. Clinical examination showed protrusion of pharyngeal wall anteriorly on right side. The drainage material was sent for smear, which revealed no organism at wet smear, negative AFB staining with negative culture 1-month later. Neck lateral X-ray examination revealed 10mm in width of retropharyngeal space, C-T(Computed tomography scan) examination revealed irregular marginated well circumscribed low density with intact fascial plane and deformed pharyngeal air space from C1 down to the C4 region of right-side retropharyngeal space on post-contrast media film. Pathologic result revealed necrotic lymphoid tissue with epitheloid cells and giant cells. After surgical treatment, the patient had a course of antituberculous regimen(INH, Rifampicin, Ethambutol, Pyridoxine).
