ABSTRACT |
Chordoma is dysontogenetic neoplasm that arise in residual or vestigial remnant of the embryonic notochord. The tumor is slow-growing, locally invasive neoplasm. Spheno-occipital chordoma may be extended ventrally in the direction of the nasopharynx, so it is sometimes called as nasopharyngeal chordoma. The authors experienced a case of 26 years old man who had suffered from nasopharyngeal foreign body sensation and intermittent headache for 1 month prior to admission. The physical examination revealed a smooth surfaced, firm, walnut-sized tumor mass which was presented in the posterior wall of nasopharynx. Nasopharynx was explored by the transpalatal approach, the tumor was well encapsulated mass containing jelly like amorphorous substance. It was extended to basiocciput and was fixed to vertebral body without capsule. The histopathological study confirmed this tumor as chordoma showing typical numerous physaliphorous cells and chondroid tissue.
