Clinical Observation of Cystic Hygroma

ABSTRACT

Cystic hygroma is benign congenital lesion of lymphatic derivation. Clinical observation has been made about 10 cases of cystic hygroma which were treated by surgical excision and confirmed pathologically at Maryknoll General Hospital in Pusan from March 1980 to August 1985. Late results of 10 cases at follow up with mean observation period of 4 years(range 22 months-7 years) were : In 9 cases there was no evidence of recurrence, in 1 case the mass is now quiescent after he experienced one episode of infection. The mass of 6 cases had been presented in the posterior triangles, 2 cases in the anterolateral neck sides, 2 cases in the submandibular areas and 6 cases in right and 4 cases in left sides, The masses were multiloculated in 4 cases, biloculated in 2 cases, uniloculated in 3 cases and had maze-like space in 1 case. There was no sex predilection : 5 cases in males and 5 cases in females. 5 cases were under the age of 2 years and the oldest was a woman of 38 years. 2 cases were accompanied with upper respiratory tract infection and fever. In 1 case, the mass was infected and filled with pus and blood clot. The best advisable treatment to prevent recurrence is ""Early Definitive Complete Extirpation"".
