ABSTRACT |
It is known that otitis media with effusion(OME) is chiefly prevalent at preschool age, however, recently there tend to increase in its incidence in adults as well. In general, OME in adults was difficult to be controlled. So these called an attention but the clinical reports about these in details are still rare. Therefore authers compared the various clinical manifestations in 25 adult patients of OME during the recent 2 years prospectively with those of 37 children patients and reached the following results ; 1) The total of 62 cases of otitis media with effusion comprises 37 cases(59.7%) in children and 25 cases(40.3%) in adults. These show the relatively high incidence rate in adults. 2) These are usually unilateral in adults and bilateral in children(p=0.001). 3) The history of recurrence, post-operative draining ear and recurrence are more common in adults than in children. And so otitis media with effusion in adults is hard to be controlled. 4) There is no significant difference in the character of effusion and the amount of total protein between adults and children. The amount of total protein is higher in mucoid effusion than in serous effusion in both adults and children. 5) In bacterial culture of the middle ear effusion, bacterial isolation rate is higher in adults than in children.
