ABSTRACT |
Nasopharyngeal angiofibromas are benign, vascular and locally aggressive neoplasms that are preferrably treated by surgical resection. For the devascularization of the tumor before the surgery, arterial embolization was performed in 22 consecutive patients. Ipsilateral internal maxillary artery was the tumor supplying vessel in all cases and ipsilateral ascending pharyngeal artery supply was accompanied in 13 cases. Contralateral supply was demonstrated in 4 cases and internal carotid, middle meningeal and accessory meningeal arteries were also noted as tumor feeder partly. 140-250μm sized PVA particle was used as embolic material in all cases after superselection of supplying vessel as much as possible. Complete embolization of all supplying vessels was possible in 16 cases, 15 of whom subsequently underwent surgery and mean intraoperative estimated blood loss was 410ml. Blood loss of incompletely embolized 4 cases was 1325ml. Cerebral infarction occurred in one case due to reflux of singificant amount of embolic material during procedure, and transient complications were encountered in eleven patients and were regressed without specific treatment.
