Clinico-Statistical Study of Foreign Bodies in the Esophagus

ABSTRACT

We have clinico-statistically analysed the 151 cases of the foreign bodies in the esophagus during the period of last 7 years from Jan. 1981 to Dec. 1987 at the Department of Otolaryngology, Keimyung University School of Medicine. The results are as follows : 1) In sex distribution, 92 cases (60.9%) were in male and 59 cases (39.1%) were in female, so the ratio between male and female was 1.5 : 1. 2) The most common foreign body was coin (83 cases : 55%), fish bone (20 cases : 13.2%) and chicken bone (18 cases : 11.9%) in order. 3) In the age distribution 79 cases (52.3%) were under 5 years of age, and in this group, coin was the most frequent material (71 cases : 89.9%). 4) The most frequent site of location of foreign body was first esophageal narrowing (133 cases : 88.1%) and second esophageal narrowing(14 cases : 9.3%) and third esophageal narrowing (4 cases : 2.6%) in order. 5) In duration of lodgement, 128 cases (84.8%) were within 1 day, and 1 case was 20 days after ingestion. 6) The most common symptom was vomiting and drooling in under 5 years of age (72 cases : 91.1%), but dysphagia and odynophagia in most adult. 7) In 4 adult cases with esophageal stricture. Food boli were impacted in stricture site of second esophageal narrowing.
