During the past 5 years from 1983 to 1987, we had observed the diseases of the ear, nose and throat which were treated and hospitalized through emergency room. The authors analysed these patients by diseases in ENT field, age, sex, day of week, and month and diseases of ENT were analysed by etiology or site of occurrence. And the following results were obtained. 1) The total number of emergency patients was 43,238 cases and the number of the patients who had diseases of ear, nose, and throat was 1,182 cases (2.73%). 2) The most frequent disease was epistaxis (31.7%), followed by foreign body (20.8%) infection on throat (14.6%), otologic disease (12.0%). 3) By age distribution, 326 cases (27.5%) were under the age of 10. 4) By the male to female ratio, male was more than female as 1.3 : 1, except drug intoxication. 5) By the day of week distribution, 468 cases (39.0%) were visited emergency room on Saturday and Sunday. 6) By monthly distribution, that was showed even distribution, the most was April (10.7%), the least February(6.3%) 7) Admission rate of ENT department through emergency room was 4.6% and the most case was acute tonsillitis. 8) The most disease of infection on throat was acute tonsillitis. 9) Trauma was occurred mostly in oral cavity (43.4%). 10) The most otologic disease was acute otitis media (43.7%), followed by otitis externa (25.4%), chronic otitis media (16.2%).
