A retrospecture analysis was carried out on the complications following 100 consecutive total laryngectomies performed at Korea Cancer Hosp. from Aug. 1985 through Dec. 1988. Among 100 patients, 26 were recurrent cases after previous curative radiotherapy. The primary lesions were larynx Ca. in 72 patients and hypopharynx Ca. in 28 patients. The operation was performed in 3 ways, total laryngectomy in 72 patients, total laryngectomy with partial pharyngectomy in 18 patients and total laryngopharyngectomy in 10 patients. In total laryngopharyngectomized patients(10 patients), the pharynx reconstruction was done with deltopectoral flap(2 patients), PMMC flap(3 patients), gastric pull-up(1 patients) and pharyngostomy with esophagostomy(2 patients). Out of 100 patients, 89 complications occurred in 52 patients. The fistula occurred in 20 patients which were influenced primarily by the presence of preoperative curative radiotherapy and the extent of surgery.
