Clinical Analysis of Emergency Patients in Otolaryngological Field |

ABSTRACT |
We reviewed 762 medical records to analyze the status of the emergency patients, who were consulted to our ENT department via emergency room from Mar. 1986 to Feb. 1989. The results were as follows : 1) The incidence of ENT patients in emergency room was 2.8%(762 cases) of 27,293 patients and admission rate was 9.4%(72 cases) of 762 cases. 2) Of the 762 cases, 499(65.5%) cases were male and 263(34.5%) cases were female. 3) According to age, the largest group in male was that of 20-29 years and in female in the age group of 20-29 years. 4) According to the visiting time, the number of PM time(492 cases ; 64.5%) was bigger than that of AM time(270 cases ; 35.5%). 5) According to seasonal distribution, the number of visits was biggest in spring(267 cases ; 35.0%) and least in winter(139 cases ; 18.4%). 6) The time interval between onset of symptom and arrival at emergency room was as follows ; 159 cases(20.9%) within 1 hour, 407 cases(53.3%) within 6 hours, 489 cases(64.2%) within 24 hours. 7) According to arrival time at emergency room, the largest group was between 8 P.M. and 10 P.M.(93 cases ; 12.3%) and the least group was between 4 A.M. and 6 A.M.(20 cases ; 2.6%). 8) The ratio of trauma patients to non-trauma patients was about 1 : 1.5(303 cases : 459 cases). 9) The most common etiology of trauma was traffic accident. 10) Among 762 patients, epistaxis were 202 cases(26.7%), facial bone fracture with 131 cases(17.4%), facial contusion with 57 cases(7.6%), acute tonsillitis with 40 cases(5.4%), esophageal foreign bodies with 34 cases(4.7%). 11) Among 762 patients, 185 cases(24.3%) were admitted to our hospital ; 72 cases(38.9%) in the department of otolaryngology and 113 cases were in other departments.
