A Clinical Study on Salivary Gland Tumors

ABSTRACT

We analyzed retrospectively the patients with salivary gland tumors who admitted Korea Cancer Center Hospital from 1977 through 1988. The available records were on 111 patients. Our data showed that the most commonly involved gland was parotid(42%), and the most frequent tumor was pleomorphic adenoma(41%). The average incidence of malignancy was 45% in parotid and submandibular gland and 64% in minor salivary glands. The most frequent type of malignancy was mucoepidermoid ca. in parotid and submandibular glands and adenoid cystic ca. in minor salivary glands. The average incidence of cervical L/N metastasis and distant metastasis were 29% and 22% respectively. The site of distant metastasis were lung, bone, brain in order of frequency. The 5 year survival rate according to stage was stage I(100%), stage II(82%), stage III(70%), stage IV(48%).
