ABSTRACT |
Hemangiomas are the most common tumors in children and mainly involve the head and neck. Hemangiomas of oral cavity and oropharynx seem to be a developmental nature. They present physicians with the most difficult treatment problems. We treated eighteen patients with oral cavity and oropharyngeal hemangiomas by use of the
CO2 laser therapy from Jan. 1984 to Apr. 1989 in the Department of Otolaryngology, College of Medicine, Kyung Hee University. The results were as follows ; 1) In sex distribution, 10 cases were male, 8 cases female. 2) Twelve cases were congenital in origin, two cases were caused by local trauma. 3) The presenting symptoms were mass(most common), throat discomfort, pain, discoloration and bleeding from the mouth. 4) The pathologic results were mostly cavernous hemangioma(17/18), but one case was a angiokeratoma circumscriptum. 5) The most frequent site of hemangiona was tongue. 6) After the
CO2 laser therapy, 16 cases had favorable results and no serious complication has developed. Laser therapy was beneficial in the treatment of oral cavity and oropharyngeal hemangiomas in the aspect of the symptomatic relief with conservation of function of oral cavity and oropharyngeal tissue.
