A analysis for 1915 cases of diagnostic biopsy and 154 cases of fine needle aspiration biopsy were attempted to evaluate the general incidence rate of the clinical use of biopsy, age distribution and sex, duration of initial symptom to biopsy, regional incidence rate, chief complaint by location, varieties of histopathological classification in the tumors. 1) Among the 1915 biopsies, there were 1303 tumor cases(68.1%) which consisted of 343 cases of malignant(26.3%) and 960 cases of benign tumors(73.7%). There were 612 inflammation cases(31.9%) which consisted of 256 cases of specific inflammation(45.1%) and 336 cases of non-specific inflammation(54.9%). 2) In the sex distribution of tumors, there were 76.1% male cases and 23.9% female cases for malignant tumors and there were 56.7% male cases and 43.3% female cases for benign tumors. 3) In the age distribution of tumor, 77.9% of malignant tumors were seen above 5th decade. 4) In the duration of initial symptoms to biopsy of malignant cases, there were most revealed 1-3 months in the nose and paranasal sinuses, tongue, tonsil, ear, neck, 3-6 months in the larynx, pharynx, palate. 5) In the distribution of chief complaints of malignant tumors, there were most revealed nasal obstruction in the nose and paranasal sinuses, hoarseness in the larynx, mass in the oral cavity, neck mass in the pharynx, palpable mass in the neck, mass in the ear. 6) Of the 343 cases of malignant tumors, there was seen most frequently in the larynx showing 111 cases(32.5%) and nose and paranasal sinuses 73 cases(21.3%) next in order. 7) Of the 960 cases of benign tumors, there was seen most frequently in the larynx showing 348 cases(36.3%) and the nose and paranasal sinuses 207 cases(21.6%) next in order. 8) Of the 343 cases of malignancy, squamous cell carcinoma(219 cases : 63.8%) was the most frequent histologic type and malignant lymphoma(41 cases : 12.0%) next in order. 9) Of the 960 cases of benign tumors, polyp(211 cases : 22.0%) was the most frequent histologic type and nodule(191 cases : 19.9%) next in order. 10) Of the 154 cases of fine needle aspiration biopsy, inflammation(99 cases : 64.3%) was the most frequently seen, and malignant tumor(40 cases : 26.0%) next in order.
