ABSTRACT

Tongue cancer is a highly aggressive disease. It is well known that the survival rate of tongue cancer is the lowest one of any other head and neck cancers. The authors report treatment reaults of 22 cases of tongue cancer who were treated at our clinic from 1980 to 1986. All the cases received curative or palliative therapy and analyzed their follow-up results. The results were as follows ; 1) 3 year survival rates were 83.3% in stage I, 66.7% in stage II and 0% in stage III and IV(AJCC, 1988). 2) Cervical metastases were 14.3% in T1, 25% in T2, 50% in T3 and 100% T4. 3) Advanced cases and poor general conditions were the most common causes of treatment failure by RT(13.6%), and inadequate safety margins were the most common causes of treatment failure by surgery(13.6%).
