ABSTRACT |
Cartilage plate has been used in ossiculoplasty, myringoplasty and canal wall reconstruction and its usefullness has been established well. But the control of thickness and bending or twisting due to irregular contraction were the problems. It is the purpose of this paper to propose the using of morphologically modified cartilage plate in middle ear surgery. Experimentally several kinds of cartilage were crushed and change of thickness were measured as well as expansion rates. Clinically these new devices were used in 20 cases of open cavity mastoidectomy with tympanoplasty as a protector of prosthesis, reinforcement of ear drum and solution for enlarging middle ear space. Tragal cartilages were most regularly crushed and conchal cartilages were not suitable for use because of too easy fragmentation. In clinical application various size of crushed cartilages were used and in short term result, anatomical and functional outcomes were acceptable.
