ABSTRACT

Corrective methods of deviated noses have been introduced and investigated for a long time in plastic surgical fields. However, owing to the complexity of the deviated structures and the septal deformities accompanying the external nasal deformities, the complete correction of the deformity is regarded as a difficult one. The authors reviewed 14 patients who were undergone corrective rhinoplasty at the otolaryngologic department of Dong Kang Hospital from 1992 to 1994 and obtained the results as follows ; 1) Patients were most commonly in fourth decade (5 cases, 35.7%). The ratio of male to female was 13 : 1. 2) Duration between the onset of nasal trauma and operation were 1 to 5 years in 5 cases (41.7%) ; 6 to 10 years in 1 case (8.3%) ; 11 to 15 years in 4 cases (33.3%), 16 to 20 years 2 cases (16.7%). 3) The causes of deformities were trauma in 12 cases (85.7%) ; congenital in 1 case (7.1%) ; unknown in 1 case (7.1%). 4) The convexity sides of nasal septal deviation were right in 8 cases(57.1%) ; left in 5 cases (35.7%) ; S-shape in 1 case (7.1%). 5) The types of deformities were scoliotic nose in 8 cases (57.1%) ; saddle nose in 5 cases (35.7%) ; hump nose in 1 case (7.1%). 6) All cases were done under local anesthesia. 7) The operative techniques of rhinoplasty corrective rhinoplasty in 3 cases (20.0%) ; augmentation rhinoplasty in 11 cases (73.3%) ; reduction rhinoplasty in 1 case (6.7%). One of corrective rhinoplasties is revision case. 8) The approaches of rhinoplasty were transnostril in 12 cases (80.0%) ; external in 3 cases (20.0%). One of external approaches is revision case. 9) The materials used in augmentation were septal cartilage in 3 cases (25.0%) ; silastic block in 3 cases (25.0%) ; perpendicular plate of ethmoid in 2 cases (16.7%) ; silastic block and temporal muscle fascia in 2 cases (16.7%) ; septal cartilage and perpendicular plate of ethmoid in 1 case (8.3%) ; septal cartilage and temporal muscle fascia in 1 case (8.3%).
