ABSTRACT |
Ramsay-Hunt syndrome is a vrial disease associated with otalgia, herpetic eruptions, facial nerve palsy and cochleovestibualr dysfunction, and is not frequently encountered in Otolaryngologic field. A clinical observtion was done on 18 patients with Ramsay-Hunt syndrome:10 patients who visited Gil General Hospital from July 1987 to March 1993, and 8 patients who visited Inchon Christian Hospital from March 1989 to June 1993 according to medical records. The result were as follows. 1) All patients had otalgia & herpetic eruption and fifteen patients developed facial nerve plasy. 2) On admission, the ten patients developed hearing loss and eight patients had normal hearing. 3) The most common site of lesion of facial nerve was the suprastapedial region, occuring in 8 out of 12 patients. 4) We feel the management of Ramasy-Hunt syndrome should inculde
Zovirax®. Nine of eighteen patients were given intravenous Zovirax® with 10mg/Kg every 8 hours over a 7-day hospitalization period. After 6 months follow-up, six of nine patients had a House-Brackmann Grade I result, one patients a Grade II, one patient a Grade III, and one patient received no follow-up. Recovery of facial nerve palsy correlated with treatment by
Zovirax®. Six of nine patients had normal hearing and two had mild hearing loss. The recovery of hearing did not correlated with
Zovirax®.
