ABSTRACT |
Benign tumors of the oral cavity and oropharynx include a wide variety of neoplasms, and are classified by the tissue of origin. These tumors have similar presentations and nondiagnostic radiologic findings, so diagnosis is commonly made only by histopathologic examination. Although benign tumors of the oral cavity and oropharynx are not life-theratening, but they can result in extensive loss of soft tissue and/or bone, recurrence, and malignant degeneration. Therapy, which is dictated by tumor type, is almost always surgical. For the purpose of proper diagnosis and management, we retrospectively reviewed the 110 patients' records of histopathologically confirmed benign tumors of oral cavity and oropharynx from January 1990 to December 1993. The results were as followings. 1) Sex ratio between male and female was 1.1 : 1. 2) The mean age was 33.9 years old and age distribution showed even distribution. 3) The most frequent site was the mobile tongue. 4) The most frequent pathologic type was the squamous cell papilloma with the incidence of 26.4%. 5) The most frequent chief complaint was mass. 6) The duration of illness was less than one year in 63.6%.
