ABSTRACT

Investigations evaluating gentamycin(GM) in the inner ear were undertaken. Guinea pigs treated with 5mg/kg gentamycin sulfate on the round window niche(RWN) showed acute changes on electrocochleogram. Hair cell or microvilli damage on scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and accumulation of GM in the whole cochlea, on immunohistochemical study, were also seen. The GM remained in the cochlea especially in the organ of Corti and the type III fibrocytes after 24 hours. Immunolocalization of GM showed high affinity of GM for the hair cells and suggested some role of type III fibrocytes on excretion of GM in inner ear fluid.
