Otitis media with effusion(OME) is one of the most common diseases in childhood, and has long puzzled the otolaryngologist. Its refractory behavior to most forms of therapy had led various investigators to postulate the cause and effect on the basis of physical dysfunction, infection, and allergy. Less effort has been expended in studying allergy as a primary cause of OME though elegant experiments have been devised to study the first two categories. The inconsistent methodology has made allergy study more difficult. Recently new standard and reliable test format for allergy was available with advent of multiple allergosorbent test chemiluminescent assay. (MAST CLA) system. Our analysis of 75 pediatric patients with OME, all having undergone MAST CLA analysis, was an attempt to determine the prevalence of allergy in OME patients. The incidence of allergy as diagnosed by MAST score was 75% in children with OME. Yet control group demonstrated only 5% of MAST score. The results suggest that occult allergy in OME was in large proportion and perhaps they need treatment to allergy.
