ABSTRACT |
Conservation surgery of the larynx is performed to extirpate malignant neoplasm of the larynx and, at the same time, to preserve the laryngeal function such as respiration, deglutition and phonation. These goals can be attained due to the tumor behavior in a fairly well predicted manner and by virtue of the unique compartmentation and barriers in the larynx. Partial resection of the larynx are either vertical or horizontal depending on the site of the tumor. Tumor resection should always take place within healthy tissue and histological examination of the surrounding tissue must to be done to confirm tumor-free marigins. Reconstruction of the larynx after partial laryngectomy aims at restoration of both laryngeal lumen and glottic competence to obtain adequate airway, good voice and avoid aspiration. The purpose of this study is to review the surgical result in glottic and supraglottic cancer, and compare them with published ones.
