ABSTRACT |
Cancer of the larynx is the most common malignacy of the head and neck region with the reported incidence of 3 to 8 per 100,000 population in Western countries. The authors conducted a nation-wide survery to determine the epidemiological characteristics of laryngeal cancer in Korea. Questionnaires were distributed to 42 training hospitals enquiring epidemiologic and clinical informations on patients with laryngeal cancer that they experienced from 1988 through 1922. There were 1592 patients with 1389 males and 140 females(9.9 : 1). The incidence of laryngeal cancer in Korea calculated according to this number was 1.2/100,000. But according to the data estimated as of National Cancer Registry, it was 2.0/100,000. Most laryngeal cancers were associated with smoking(95.9% of patients) and a large portion(62.3%) were regular users of alcohol. There were 605 patients(39.6%) with supraglottic carcinoma, 817 patients(53.4%) with glottic carcinoma, and 25 patients(1.6%) with subglottic carcinoma. Two hundred ninety seven IV disease at presentation. Treatment modality consisted of 334 patients(21.8%) that had received operation only, 339 patients(22.2%) received radiotherapy alone and 365 patients(23.9%) received combined therapy of operation followed by radiotherapy.
