A Clinical Analysis of Herpes Zoster Oticus

ABSTRACT

Herpes zoster oticus is a disease associated with otalgia, vesicles, peripheral type of facial palsy, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo and other nonspecific symptoms. Facial palsy is the most serious problem. Degeneration of the facial nerve tends to be severe in herpes zoster oticus than in Bell's palsy. The main conservative treatment is acyclovir, steroid hormone and vitamin. Authors reviewed 27 patients (F : 17, M : 10) with Herpes zoster oticus during past 10 years from January 1986 to December 1995 for analysis of clinical features. The results were as follows ; 1) It occurred more often in female (63%) and it also occurred more often on the right side in 16 cases (59.2%). 2) It was seen relatively more often in sixth decades showing 8 cases (29.6%). 3) It was most frequently found in August % December, and October and July are next in order. 4) Otalgia appeared most commonly as initial symptom in 17 cases (63%). 5) Vesicular eruption and otalgia were the most frequent symptoms in all cases. 6) Facial palsy was more improved in case of visit within 9 days and combination of acyclovir, steroid and physical therapy.
