ABSTRACT

Grading system is very important to evaluate facial paralysis. Many grading systems has proposed, but there isn't perfect one nowadays. Purpose of this study is to compare the ability of regional and gross system to grade the facial function and to know merits of each system. 49 cases with peripheral facial paralysis were studid. Each case was graded by using House-Brackmann system as a gross system and May-Hosomi's modification as a regional system. There is a high correlation between House-Brackmann system and Hosomi's modification(r=-0.8888). Hosomi's modification showed lower score than House-Brackmann system, esp. Grade II and III. House-Brackmann system is easy to use and concise criteria for each grade, and appropriate to use in long term follow-up of facial paralysis. Hosomi's modification is more or less objective, quantitative, and convenient to use in the acute stage.
