ABSTRACT

Sarcomas arising in the major salivary glands are exceedingly rare neoplasms, accounting for approximately 0.3% of all neoplasms of the glands. They most frequently affect the parotid glands than other salivary glands. The mean age of the patients of time of histopathologic diagnosis is 37 years, and the mean survival time is 30 months. Prognosis is correlated with size of the neoplasm, type of sarcoma, and histologic grade. We have experienced a case of sarcoma originating from left submandibular gland. The patient was 66-year-old male who complained painless mass of submandibular triangle. The patient was treated with extended resection of submandibular gland with surrounding tissue, and supraomohyoid neck dissection and post operative rediation therapy. The final histopathologic diagnosis was a malignant fibrous hisiocytoma.
