ABSTRACT

115 cases of laryngeal polyp have been studied clinically and histopathologically at Kyungpook University Hospital in the past 10 years. The result of this study is as follows. 1. It seems that male is more vulnerable than female, however, singer's nodule and edematous swelling occurred more frequently in female. The age distribution shows the highest incidence in 30's, then 20's, 40's in its declining order. 2. Contrary to what we expect, the occupational difference, in terms of the amount of using vocal cord, doesn't seem to give any effect on its occurrence. 3. More than half of the cases have made the first visit to the clinic between 3 to 12 months from the time of onset. 4. Approximately, half of the cases have shown the insidious onset and slow process in its clinical manifestation. 5. The site of polyp shows no difference on both side. More than half of the cases, it grows at anterior-middle border of the vocal cord, in the red color, and in the non pedicle, semilunar shape. 6. Histopathologically, the epithelial layer of polyp shows hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, flattening, and hypertrophy, etc. with milder degree however. In the stroma, there are various changes ; dilation of venules and capillary, congestion, edema, hemorrhage, infiltration of inflammatory cells, new capillary formation, fibrosis and deposit of amyloid, etc. 7. Upon the consideration of genesis, histopathological finding indicates that the following factors seem to be involved ; local circulatory disturbance, inflammation, mechanical irritation, and its anatomical and physiological characteristics.
