A statistical study of foreign bodies in the food passage.

ABSTRACT

A statistical analysis of 100 foreign bodies in the food passages which were encountered in the department of otolaryngology, Hae Sung Hospital and Dong Kang Hospital, Ulsan from Jan. 1988 to Dec, 1990 was presented. 1) The incidence of foreign bodies in order of frequency was coin(65%), bone(12%), metal(8%), plastic(7%) in the food passage. 2) In the location of foreign bodies of the food passage, the 71%(71 cases) were in the first esophageal narrowing ; 19%, in the second narrowing ; 10%, in the third narrowing. 3) In the age distribution, 71 cases(71%) of esophageal foreign bodies were under the age of 5 years. All coins were found in group under the age of 10 years. 4) In the sex distribution, there were 58 males(58%) and 42 females(41%). The sex ratio was 1.38 : 1. 5) In duration of lodgement, 71%(71 cases) of foreign bodies in the food passage were removed within 24 hours. But one case of foreign body in the food passage was removed after 2 months. 6) Three cases were repeated esophageal foreign bodies and the other 2 cases were double esophageal foreign bodies. 7) Almost all of the foreign bodies in the food passage were removed by endoscopic procedure under general anesthesia.
