The neurilemmoma is a rare benign tumor, which is known to be originated from the Schwann sheath of the nerve fibers. It is found usually as a mass. It may precipitate symptoms by pressing the nerve fibers. We studied retrospectively 15 patients who had been diagnosed as neurilemmoma pathologically after the operation at the department of otolaryngology, Chungnam national university hospital from Mar. 1984 to Nov. 1990. The results were as follows; 1) There were 6 males and 9 females with a sex ratio of 1:1.5. Age distribution was from 12 to 65 years, with peak incidence in the 4th decade(33.3%). 2) The most common chief complaint was palpable mass(8 cases, 53.3%). 3) The most frequent duration of disease was between 6 month and 1 year(5 cases, 33.3%). 4) The involved sites were paraphryngeal space(4 cases), oropharynx(2 cases), nasal cavity(2 cases), parotid(2 cases), tongue(2 cases), nasal cavity and ethmoid sinus(2 cases), floor of mouth(1 case) and intratemporal region(1 case). 5) The identified nerves of origin were cervical sympathetic chain(3 cases), vagus nerve(2 cases) and facial nerve(2 cases). 6) The complications were vocal cord palsy(3 cases), Horner's syndrome(2 cases) and facial nerve paralysis(1 case).
