ABSTRACT |
There were few quantitative studies of glandular tissues on human nasal mucosa. The purpose of this work was to investigate the difference of glandular area in various sites of turbinates and composition of glycoproteins of glands in 20 normal subjects. Glands in anterior, middle, and posterior portion of inferior and middle turbinate were stained by the AB-PAS method. The area of glands in various sites of turbinates was measured with YAP 1.0 program by the light microscope. And then we compared them. The results were followed ; 1) The mean area of glands was not different in various sites of turbinates. 2) Neutral glycoproteins were more common than acid glycoproteins and most of acid glycoproteins were sialomucin in nasal glands. Finally, additional prospective studies correlating the morphologic data with clinical data are needed for better understanding of glandular function.
