ABSTRACT

A total of 217 cases of neoplasms in the otolaryngologic field were studied by means of biopsy and histopathological examinations of surgical specimens. Those were carried out for last 29 months at the National Medical Center and a statistical review was performed in order to evaluate the clinical prognosis.
The distribution of tumors in the histopathological classification is as follows

The distribution with regard to sex shows 145 cases(66%) in male and 72 cases(34%) in females. Malignant tumors occur 2.5 times as frequently in males as in females. For benign tumors the rate is 1.4:1.

Age distribution ; 85 malignant cases(60%) occurred between the age of 41 to 60. Of the 76 benign cases(48%) occurred between the age of 11 to 20. The remaining 28 occurred after the age of 20.

Localization of tumors ; 62 cases(29%) were located in the nose and paranasal sinuses. Of these 13 cases(20%) were squamous cell carcinoma and 20 cases(27%) were nasal polyps. 60 cases were located in the mouth and the distribution of malignant and benign tumors is approximately the same as in the nose. Of 40 tumors in the larynx 20 cases were squamous cell ca, and 16 papillomas. All tumors are classified in 4 groups, in the 1st no treatment was given at all, in the 2-nd group X-ray therapy only, operation only in the 3-rd group and in group 4 operation with X-ray therapy. In the study of prognosis, 46 malignant cases were followed up, the result is shown in table.
