The nasopharynx is not a common site for malignant tumor and the diagnosis and treatment of this tumor has been great problem with frequent misdiagnosis. This malignant tumor is a highly malignant tumor and is characterized by frequent occurrence in younger age groups and familial predilection. The authors report 67 cases of histologically proved nasopharyngeal malignant tumors during last 10 years. 1) There were 42 males and 25 females with sex ratio of 1.7 : 1. 2) The age distribution was from 13 to 77 and the mean age was 50.8 in male, 43.4 in female and 48.0 in total. 3) The presenting symptoms were as following : nasal obstruction 53.7%, headache 47.8%, neck swelling 43.3%, nasal bleeding 31.3%, hearing disturbance 24.1%. 4) The chief complaints were as followings : nasal symptoms 44.4%, neck symptoms 22.2%, neurologic symptoms 18.5%, ear symptoms 14.8%. 5) The mean duration of the symptomatic peroid prior to the first visit to the hospital was 4.3 months. 6) The time interval from the first visit to diagnosis was average 16.1 days. 7) The X-ray studies showing the erosion and destruction of the skull base was 16.1%. 8) Histopathologically the squamous cell carcinoma(34.3%), was most commonly observed, followed by the undifferentiated cell carcinoma(31.3%), malignant lymphoma(17.9%), lymphoepithelioma(9.0%). |
