A statistical study was carried out on 573 cases with chief complaint of hoarseness at the dept. of otolaryngology of Ehwa Womans University Hospital during the past 5 years from Jan. 1975 to Dec. 1979 and the following results were obtained. 1) Among total out patient of 19,963 who visited the dept. of otolaryngology, the patients with hoarseness were 573 cases(2.9%). 2) Among total of 573 cases, male were 250 and female were 323, the ration being 1 : 1.3. 3) The underlying diseases causing hoarseness in order of frequency were chronic laryngitis 139 cases(24.3%), acute laryngitis 126 cases(22%), singer's nodule 88 cases(15.4%), vocal cord paralysis 45 cases(7.9%), vocal polyp 40 cases(7%), laryngeal cancer 15 cases(2.6%). Also, the normal laryngeal finding on physical examination was seen on 40 cases(7%). 4) The highest incidence of age causing hoarseness in order of frequency were 3rd decade 155 cases(27.1%), 2nd decade 122 cases(21.3%), 4th decade 118 cases(20.6%). The lowest age is 1-year-old and the highest age is seventy eight-year-old. 5) The highest incidence of age for underlying diseases in order of frequency were as that follow; acute laryngitis in 2nd decade 42 cases(7.3%), chronic laryngitis in 3rd decade 39 cases(6.8%), singer's nodule in 3rd decade 29 cases(5.1%), vocal cord paralysis in 5th decade 11 cases(1.9%). The cases of normal finding of physical examination was 3rd decade 13 cases(2.3%). 6) Number of the patients who came the hospital within 10 days after the onset of hoarseness were 119 cases(20.8%), 5 cases had medical attention for the first time 10 years after hoarseness. 7) The highest incidence of the duration from the onset to consultation for the underlying diseases were as that follows: acute laryngitis within 10 days 88 cases(15.4%), chronic laryngitis 3-6M 32 cases(5,6%), singer's nodule 1-3M, 3-6M, 6M-1Yr. 15 cases each(2.6%), vocal polyp 6M-1Yr. 12 cases(2.1%), vocal cord paralysis 3-6M 11 cases(1.9%).
