A statistical analysis of 626 biopsy done between March-1971 and February-1981 at the department of Otolaryngology, Chosun University Hospital was carried out. The results are as follows; 1) Among 14,569 new patients at E.N.T. department, 626 patients (4.3%) took diagnostic biopsy. Male patients were 392 (63%), female 234 (37%). Among 626 patients who had taken diagnostic biopsy, 34 patients (5.4%) had to take repeated biopsies, especially in case of nasal and paranasal cavity and larynx. 2) The site of biopsy included neck (24.3%), larynx (15.5%), nose and paranasal sinuses (14.2%), tongue (12.0%), other parts of oral cavity (8.0%) and oropharynx (6.2%). 3) Histologic findings are as below; primary malignancy 34.7%, specific inflammation 11.0%, nonspecific inflammation 23.5%, secondary malignancy 5.3%, benign tumor 15.3%, cyst 3.5%. 4) Of 217 patients with primary malignancy, male to female ratio is 3.3 : 1, and most prominent in patients between 40's and 60's (81.8%). Cytologic finding included squamous cell carcinoma (60.4%), malignant lymphoma (12.4%) and undifferentiated carcinoma (4.1%). 5) Of 147 patients with nonspecific inflammation, there is no particular difference in age and sex ratio. 6) 96 patients with benign tumor are almost distributed between 20's and 40's (57.3%). And almost all the tumors are originated either from epithelial cell (66.7%) or mesenchymal cell (27.0%). 7) 69 patients with specific inflammation were found to have the nature of tuberculosis (89.9%). 8) There are 33 patients with metastatic tumors and all the metastatic tumors are found on cervical lymph node except one (97%). Their primary focuses included G-I tract (25%), hepatobiliary tract (12.5%), bronchial tree (9.4%), breast (6.3%) and unknown (37.5%). 9) Cysts were found in 22 patients with same incidence in both sexes and most frequently noticed in the site of neck (45.5%). |
