ABSTRACT |
The facial nerve is prone to be injured due to the anatomical complexity, and long course in the temporal bone. But the injured facial nerve can be recovered when it is detected early. Electrodiagnosis of facial nerve was first described by Duchenne(1872), and Campbell(1962) described the nerve excitability measurements in prognosis of facial palsy. In 1963 the facial nerve stimulator was devised by Hilger and the-reafter the nerve excitability measurement became easier and popular in the diagnosis of the facial nerve paralysis. But there was lack of normal data of the threshold of the normal facial nerve excitability in our country. So author tried to measure the normal data of 17 males and 13 females with no gross facial dissymmetricity, and the mean value is as follows : 1) Mean value of the threshold of facial nerve excitability is, Main trunk : 1.82mA(SD : 0.38), Temporal branch : 1.38mA(SD : 0.30), Zygomatic branch : 1.32mA(SD : 0.27), Buccal branch : 1.50mA(SD : 0.37), Mandibular branch : 1.21mA(SD : 0.23), Cervical branch : 1.33mA(SD : 0.28). 2) The difference of the mean value between right side and left side was not significant(p<0.05). 3) The difference of the mean value between male and female was not significant except main trunk & buccal branch(p<0.05). 4) The mean value of nerve excitability threshold of facial nerve in chronic otitis media was within normal limit.
