ABSTRACT

Chronic suppurative otitis media is one of the most frequent diseases in the otolaryngologic field. The studies on bacterial distribution in chronic suppurative otitis media were made by many otologists, but there are some differences in them. Bacteriological studies and their sensitivity to antibiotics were made on 134 cases of the chronic suppurative otitis media who visited the department of otolaryngology, Seoul Adventist Hospital during a period of Oct. 1981 through March 1982. The results obtained were as follows : 1) Among 134 cases of chronic suppurative otitis media, the pathogenic organisms were Staphylococcus (49.2%), Pseudomonas (23.9%), Proteus (4.4%), Citrobacter (4.4%), E-Coli (1.5%), yeast like cell (1.5%) and etc. (13.4%) in order of frequency. 2) In sex distribution ; Female patient (50.7%), male patient (41.8%). 3) In age distribution ; 0-4 years old (28.4%), 5-9 years old (17.9%), 15-19 years old (17.9%), 10-14 years old (11.9%) were most prevalent. 4) Among the all cases, 106 cases were affected unilaterally and 28 cases were affected bilaterally. 5) Simple infection was in 116 cases (86.6%) and mixed infection was in 40 cases (47.8%). Staphylococcus was most prevalent in simple and mixed infection. 6) Of 20 cholesteatomatous otitis media, the pathogenic organisms were Pseudomonas 8 (40.0%) proteus 4 (20.0%), Staphylococcus 2 (10.0%), Citrobacter 2 (10.0%) in order of frequency. On the other hand, of 114 non-cholesteatomatous otitis media, the pathogenic organisms were Staphylococcus 64 (56.1%), Pseudomonas 24 (21.1%), Citrobacter 4 (3.5%), Proteus 2 (1.8%) in order of frequency. 7) Staphylococcus was sensitive to C.P.I., Mino., C.M., A.K., G.M. and resistant to P.P., T.C., K.M., A.P. etc. 8) Pseudomonas was sensitive to A.K., T.B. and resistant to T.C., N.M., K.M., G.M. etc. 9) Proteus was sensitive to K.M., T.B., A.M., C.M and resistant to N.M., C.M., G.M. etc. 10) Citrobacter was sensitive to A.K., T.B., C.P.I. and resistant to P.P. 11) Streptococcus was hightly sensitive to P.P., A.K., C.P.I. and slightly sensitive to T.C., N.M., G.M. etc.
