ABSTRACT

Detailed description of present history by using uniform questionnaire and a series of standard equilibrium function test(SEFT) have been conducted on 198 dizzy patients who received treatment at the department of Otolaryngology, Osaka University Hospital. Then we evaluated the correlation between history of present illness and the results of SEFT by computer programming and analyzed statistically. The results obtained were as follows : 1) There was no difference between rotatoy sensation and floating sensation in SEFT results. But in case of disequilibrium, high rate of positive results was shown in standing and deviation test(100%), visual suppression test, ETT, and OKN test. 2) Accompanying symptoms with dizziness attack were good indication in predicting positive results of SEFT and were useful for diagnosing the lesion site. 3) Duration and frequency of dizziness attack have good correlation with the occurrence of positive results in SEFT : The longer the duration of dizziness becomes, the higher the rate of positive result appears. 4) A time from disappearance off dizziness to the date of SEFT : High rate of positive(average 52.3%) was obtained when SEFT was done within 3 days after dizziness attack. However, it became low(31.3%) when SEFT was done longer than 1 month after dizziness. 5) In series of SEFT, ENG recording of paroxysmal positional nystagmus test showed the highest rate of positive result(66.2%), followed by positional test(61.3%), caloric test(56.0%), standing test(50%) and deviation test(40%) in order.
