ABSTRACT

Today, the patient who are suffered from dizziness or equilibrium disturbance are increasing while the information about vestibular function test in dizzy patients is relatively rare. We reviewed the detailed clinical history and result of vestibular function test in 70 cases of dizzy patients who visited the Department of Otolaryngology, Kyung Hee University Hospital during a period of June, 1985 through May, 1986. The following results were obtained. 1) The most frequently found disease in central nervous system was cerebrovascular attack, the one in peripheral vestibular system was benign paroxysmal peripheral vertigo, and the one in the other system was cardiovascular disorder. 2) Rotation sense as the chief complaint was most frequently found in peripheral disorders. 3) In accompanying symptoms, hearing disturbance, tinnitus and ear fullness were noted usually in peripheral disorders. But, numbers of patients with headache or visual disturbance were not different between in central and in peripheral disorders. 4) Patients who had positive results in righting reflex and deviation tests were more as long as the duration of dizziness were. 5) Patients who had positive result in Romberg test, gaze nystagmus test, positional and positioning nystagmus tests were more in central disorders and those in calorimetry were more in peripheral disorders. 6) The positive results of vestibular function test in dizzy patients as a whole were as follows ; (1) Righting reflex test : the 24 of 70 cases (34.3%) (2) Deviation test : the 33 of 70 cases (47.1%) (3) Gaze nystagmus test : the 4 of 55 cases (7.2%) (4) Positional nystagmus test : the 2 of 28 cases (7.1%) (5) Positioning nystagmus test : the 3 of 27 cases (11.1%) (6) Calorimetry : the 20 of 70 cases (28.5%).
