A Statistical Study of Foreign Bodies in Food and Air Passage |

ABSTRACT |
Statistical analysis of 169 foreign bodies in the esophagus and air passage which were encountered in the Department of Otolaryngology, Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital from Sep. 1981 to Aug. 1986 was presented. 1) Distribution of location was 162 cases(95.8%) in the esophagus and 7 cases(4.2%) in the air passage. 2) In the age incidence, most of patients in the esophagus were children under the age of five : 132 cases(81.5%). 3) Under 5 years old group in the cases of food passage, coin was the most frequent material : 113 cases(69.7%) Over 40 years old group in the food passage, meat was the most frequent material : 6 cases. 4) Male was more frequently involved than female. 5) Coin was the most frequent foreign body in the food passage : 73.5%. 6) The most prevalent site of lodgement in the esophagus was the first narrowing : 150 cases(92.5%). 7) In duration of lodgement, 138 cases(85.2%) of esophageal foreign body were removed within 24 hours and 6 cases(86.6%) of air passage were removed within 24 hours. 8) The badook pieces was represented 7 cases(4.3%) among the esophageal foreign bodies and we experienced good results using the resin applied forcep under the local anesthesia.
