A Statistical Analysis of the Foreign Bodies in the Food Passages

ABSTRACT

Clinical observation is made on the total 114 cases of foreign bodies in the food passages. The entire foreign bodies cases that had visited ENT department of Incheun Christian Hospital from Jan., 1984 to Dec., 1987 are included in this study. 1) Coins were the most frequent foreign bodies in the esophagus(78.9%). Chicken bone(6.2%), pin(3.5%), shell fish(2.6%) were next frequent foreign bodies in the esophagus. 2) In sex distribution, 71 cases(62.2%) were male. The ratio between male and female was 1.7 : 1. 3) In the age incidence, 75.4% of the esophageal foreign bodies was under 5 years of age. 4) The most prevalent site of lodgement in the esophagus was the first physiologic ring(94.7%). 5) In duration of lodgement, 80.7% of esophageal foreign bodies were removed within 1 day, and almost of them were removed within 3 days.
