ABSTRACT

Inverted papilloma arising from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is uncommon epithelial tumor which is characterized by its capacity to destroy, marked tendency of local recurrence and association with malignancy. The authors reviewed 11 cases of pathologically diagnosed inverted papilloma from July 1980 to July 1988. The results are as follows ; 1) The male was more frequently affected(M : F=10 : 1) and the mean age of the patients was 50 year. 2) The most common presenting symptom was unilateral nasal obstruction and nasal discharge, headache and hyposmia were frequently presented. 3) The 7 cases had the history of previous nasal surgery. 4) The lateral nasal wall was the most frequent site of tumor and in many cases, combined involvement of the adjacent paranasal sinuses was detected. All cases had the unilateral involvement. 5) Lateral rhinotomy, Medial maxillectomy & ethmoidectomy were performed in 3 cases and Caldwell-Luc's operation & ethmoidectomy in 3 cases. 6) In 7 cases, postoperative follow-up was done from 5 months to 5 years. The recurrence was occurred in 2 cases and the development of squamous cell carcinoma was detected in 1 case.
