ABSTRACT |
Hearing results are presented for 32 ears with chronic otitis media, which were operated on except ears of congenital anomalies, ears with intact ossicular link, and ears of radical mastoidectomy or modified radical mastoidectomy, and in which tympanoplasty and ossiculoplasty was performed using autograft ossicle in 19 ears and homograft ossicle in 13 ears. The ears were followed up 1 month and 6 months postoperatively. The authors have retrospectively reviewed and analyzed the 32 ears operated upon by the senior author(Y.S Yue) during the interval from January, 1988 to october, 1988. The results are compared with the status of ossicles, the type of graft material, and the condition of middle ear mucosa which was actually operated by usage of silastic sheet. Hearing results using autograft or homograft ossicle were statistically not significant, but whether using silastic sheet or not was singificant(p<0.05) that implies that good middle ear mucosa is one of the important factors, which are required for successful hearing result, and ossicle graft material is not important factor in view of short term result.
