ABSTRACT |
We performed a clinical analysis on 30 locoregional recurrence among 185 total laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer at the Kyungpook National University Hospital during 10 years from January 1983 to December 1992. The reasons for laryngectomy of 185 patients were as follows ; primary treatment 166, salvage treatment after radiation therapy 14, salvage treatment after conservation surgery 5 cases. Among 30 patients developed locoregional recurrences : 14 patients had local recurrence including 7 stomal recurrences, 16 patients had recurrence of cervical lymph nodes : 9 of them had recurred at the site of the previous neck dissection. The significant causes of locoregional failure in surgically treated laryngeal cancer are failure of exact tumor staging, lack of enough safe surgical margin and incomplete neck dissection, lack of meticulous surgical manipulation and enough irrigation of the surgical fields after removal of specimen.
