ABSTRACT |
Herpes zoster oticus is characterized by a viral prodrome with otalgia, vesicles and peripheral type of facial palsy. Facial palsy is the most serious problem. The hearing impairment is sudden, unexpected and seldom returns to normal if it is seriously effected. Previously high dose of steroid recognized to prevent replication of Varicella zoster. We reviewed 13 patient with Herpes zoster oticus from April 1990 to December 1993 for analysis of clinical features and effectiveness of Acyclovir. The results were following : 1) The complete recovery rate of facial palsy was 53.9%. 2) The statistically acceptable prognostic factors of facial nerve palsy were age, multiple cranial nerve involvement, NET(Nerve excitability test) and Schimer's test. 3) The hearing disability showed better prognosis in speech range than in high frequency.
